The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an experienced professional engineer to provide strategic leadership and engineering oversight for the Olympic Region’s Construction Program. As the Assistant Region Construction Engineer, you will serve as a key member of the region's senior management and will be responsible for managing the construction program activities for up to four Project Engineering Offices. The selected candidate will ensure the construction program is delivered in accordance with WSDOT policy and expectations, ensuring excellent customer service, transparency, and accountability. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Assistant Region Construction Engineer will:

  • Provide leadership, senior-level direction, support, management and engineering oversight of the construction program activities and resources.
  • Work collaboratively with the Olympic Region management team to implement region-wide policy and provide direct input into region construction program policy and implementation.
  • Serve as a member of the Incident Management Team and provide direct support and oversight of tactical field operations such as the supervision of operations in the event of the mobilization of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
  • Mentor and coach staff including setting clear expectations and responsibilities and providing feedback.
  • Work closely with the State Construction Office to shape the department's construction contracting policies.
  • Actively participate in the planning and development of current and future construction contracts.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • A Professional Engineer license in the State of Washington or license holder from another state with the ability to obtain licensure in the State of Washington as a Professional Engineer within six (6) months of hire.
  • A strong engineering background with experience managing construction contracts.
  • Experience managing a diverse workforce. 
  • Extensive knowledge of department construction principles and practices, contracting methods and procedures, stewardship agreement, and program (budget, schedule, environmental, quality, etc.) accountability.
  • Strong skills in establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall program strategy/results; monitoring, measuring performance, and making necessary course corrections to the same.
  • Strong skills in effective communication with employees, elected officials, media, industry, and the public and the ability to evaluate, coordinate, and respond to all customers.
  • The ability to evaluate and negotiate disputes and complex contractual issues and make timely, effective decisions in the best interest of the department.
  • A strong working knowledge of principles of management and personnel administration.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities including coaching and mentoring staff and establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall program strategy and results.
  • A valid driver's license.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience as a licensed professional engineer in such areas as construction, design, and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related structures.
  • Six (6) years of demonstrated and progressively responsible managerial/supervisory experience in managing a diverse workforce.

  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • This position requires a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of Washington. License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within six months of appointment.
