The Opportunity
WSDOT has an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer in the Tumwater Design Office located in Lacey, WA. As the Design Team Leader, you will be responsible for successful completion and delivery of highway transportation projects. The selected candidate will supervise, and lead assigned design staff, coordinate work activities, set priorities, manage the project schedule, coordinate with specialty groups, provide direction and guidance, review work products for quality and completeness, and communicate project status with project managers. In this role you will also be responsible for organizing, coordinating, and performing technical reviews of engineering related elements for consultant agreements. Our top candidate must be able to build trust and work collaboratively and effectively with local agencies, consultants, support groups and contract administration staff.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Team Leader will:

  • Provide supervision and guidance to designers and technician in the preparation of designs, plans, specification, cost estimates, and hydraulic analyses. 
  • Evaluate deviations from established standards or practices and oversee the preparation of supporting documentation for approval.
  • Regularly communicate with specialty groups on status of deliverables in accordance with project schedule and Scope of Work Agreements.
  • Assist in responding to inquiries from the public and other agencies.
  • Prepare correspondence for Project Engineers and Region managers. 
  • Manage WSDOT projects designed by consultants including administration of the consultant agreements. 
  • Lead technical reviews of engineering related elements for Architectural and Engineering agreements, supplements, and task orders.
  • Oversee the consultants’ work and monitor the progress, ensure work is completed accurately, on time, and within budget.
  • Independently monitor and evaluate the consultant conformance to regulatory provisions of agreements and other issues of compliance.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience as Transportation Engineer 2, Bridge Engineer 2 or Transportation Planning Specialist 2 or equivalent experience with a city, county, DOT in another state or with an engineering consulting firm. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, practices and methods and ability to apply them to complex engineering problems to ensure compliance with industry standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of project schedule and budget management for application to on-time and within budget delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver multiple projects involving a variety of resources, support groups and other agencies or businesses.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to work effectively with project offices, other team members, support offices, consultants, and independently to complete assigned tasks.
  • Experience prioritizing and handling multiple tasks in a high production, frequently changing environment.
  • Experience successfully communicating with multiple audiences, both orally and in writing.
  • Proven skills in research to examine, develop and propose alternate solutions while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using software to produce reports and spreadsheets to communicate project development information with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Outlook to compose professional documentation and reports. 

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major study in engineering, transportation, or a closely related field. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of WSDOT practices and procedures.
