Berkeley Lab’s Facilities Division has an opening for an Electrical Design Engineer to join their Engineering Team!

 

In this role, you will have oversight of the electrical system elements (e.g., low voltage equipment and wiring, medium voltage equipment and wiring, etc.), electrical system studies (e.g. fault studies, protection and coordination studies, and load flow studies etc.), and electrical safety evaluations (e.g. NFPA 70E evaluations, arc flash studies, etc.). As the Facilities Electrical Design Engineer, you will develop and provide designs for maintenance and small projects that are designed in-house, review designs prepared by architect/engineer consultants, review construction submittals and RFIs, inspect construction, and review record drawings.

 

What You Will Do:

• Ensure that construction documents prepared by Engineering consultants meet Division standards and specifications, including single line diagrams, panel schedules, floor plans, electrical layouts, etc.

• Work with Division Planning Group and Facility Area Managers (FAM) on small projects, system modifications, and provide all required designs for completion of the assigned projects.

• Advise project managers, facility managers, health and safety managers, outside A/E consultants, and LBNL leadership on issues and questions pertaining to compliance with relevant codes and standards, including NFPA 70E, NEC, NETA ATS, and NETA MTS.

• Meet project time-cost-performance requirements, develop Owner's Project Requirements (OPR), formulate design criteria, and coordinate work with other disciplines and outside A&E firms.  Resolve review comments on construction documents and project submittals.

• Provide construction inspection (punch list and job walks) of electrical components for buildings, project and field activities to ensure adherence to safety standards, building codes, and specifications.

• Comply with all industry design standards, codes, regulations, orders, and directives.

• Use computer-aided drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing software programs to prepare standard details, specifications and other electronic files to satisfy project-specific requirements.

• Responsible owner for Electrical Engineering Master Specs including soliciting and reviewing feedback on issues and recommendations and ensuring periodic updates are completed and communicated.

• Assume system ownership of LBNL electrical infrastructure and ensure safety, maintenance, and strategic planning for timely renewal of such systems.

 

What is Required:

• A Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Engineering (or a closely related discipline) and a minimum of 5 years of directly relevant experience in the electrical design of office space, research laboratories, industrial facilities, and site systems.

• Extensive knowledge of current industry and regulatory standards, California Building Code (CBC), National Electric Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards 70E, 70B, NETA.

• Demonstrated understanding of electrical design principles, electrical construction methods, and materials for facilities constructability.

• Experience with preparation of construction documents for projects involving specifications, medium and low voltage power distribution, raceway layout, underground duct bank, lighting, grounding, cable trays, control schematics, connection diagrams, telephone, paging, fire alarm, CCTV, intercom and security access systems.

• Hands-on experience of computer aided drafting software with knowledge of AutoCAD, proficiency with software applications related to electrical and design tasks (ETAP, SKM-PTW, easy power, ASPEN, PSLF, etc.), database management, cost estimating and project scheduling.

• Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California or ability to transfer a License from another state within 6 months.

• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including experience collaborating with and advising management.

• Excellent interpersonal skills including experience effectively working across organizational and institutional boundaries on multiple projects with varying priorities and tight concurring deadlines.

• Must have the ability to climb ladders and perform site walk-thru, at times around hazardous systems and equipment, to investigate as-built conditions, to inspect construction, equipment, systems, and structures.

 

What We Prefer:

• A Master’s Degree (or equivalent knowledge/training) in Engineering (or a closely related discipline) and a minimum of 7 years of directly relevant experience in the electrical design of office space, research laboratories, industrial facilities, and site systems.

• Expertise in the SKM-PTW software tool for electrical modeling and analysis.

 

Notes:

• This is a full time career appointment, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid).

• Salary is commensurate with experience.
