General Job Purpose:
The Lead Mechanical Engineer is a front-line supervisor responsible for leading a team of mechanical engineers, performing system and component level mechanical and opto-mechanical design, analysis and testing of Ophir engineering projects and products. This position requires an active US Department of Defense (DoD) Security Clearance, or the ability to obtain one, for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Management duties to include resource planning and performance management of a small engineering team and engineering support personnel.

Interface with Project Engineering and Program Management.

Design mechanical assemblies required to meet high environmental loads, maintain very high stability tolerances, and meet rigorous reliability standards.

Provide design concepts for future product development in the form of proposal input, programmatic presentations, and design analysis.

Prepare and maintain drawings, manufacturing plans, test plans, statements of work, performance specifications, systems descriptions, and theory of operations.

Execute, test, verify, review designs, and communicate change notices for new releases and revisions.

Develop and execute system and component level test plans and procedures for the hardware performance.

Supervise product design and development to include laser and laser mounting effort.

Perform engineering and design of mechanical, electro-mechanical and laser/optical hardware including the creation of technical drawings from concept to release stages.

Utilizes Finite Element analysis software and hand calculations to evaluate designs for compliance with structural integrity and thermal requirements.

Plan and monitor the procurement, fabrication, assembly, installation and testing of product hardware to ensure required quality and performance levels are met.

Support fabrication and assembly processes.

Support program/project cost and schedule milestones.

Supervisory Duties:
Directly manage accounting & planning/scheduling staff providing daily direction.
Communicate regularly with team.

Perform supervisory responsibilities (hiring, training, career development, coaching, promotions, terminations, and performance evaluations) for direct reports.

Review and analyze staff performance commensurate to desired results.

Job Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
Knowledge of opto-mechanical design and techniques a plus

Advanced knowledge of CREO / Pro Engineer CAD software and experience with Finite Element analysis, preferably using Femap (Finite Element Modeling And Postprocessing) with NX NASTRAN.

Excellent documentation and communication skills.

Familiar with optical systems and image capturing technology.

Ability to direct technical staff and develop relationships with key suppliers.

Ability to work collaboratively.

Familiar with program costs and schedule.

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Experience:
6+ years’ experience in relevant job positions.

Experience with heat transfer including conduction, convection, and radiation thermal analysis.

Experience with time estimation required for design, fabrication, and testing processes.

Experience working with manufacturing, facilities/machine shop, creating test plans, directing the assembly processes, and overseeing final product quality.

Experience working with teams to include engineering, scientists, business development, customers, and program management.

Experience with managing and mentoring personnel to include performance evaluations and conflict resolution.

Working Environment:
Work performed in an office or lab environment.
