The Advanced Materials Characterization Group that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and talented materials engineer to join a multidisciplinary research group in execution of research specifically dealing with problems in the areas of high temperature material behavior and environmental effects of aerospace metals, with special attention given to fatigue performance. Major job duties include: Providing technical expertise on high temperature material behavior and its correlation with microstructure and damage evolution. Conducting analysis and developing new methodology for determining the behavior of structural materials used in high temperature applications. Characterizing microstructure and damage mechanisms using metallurgical tools. This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The successful candidate is expected to provide technical expertise to the AFRL research team to define and meet project objectives, and to summarize findings in technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Additional attributes sought include strong interpersonal and communication skills, detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks, able to prioritize workloads, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

R2 Minimum Qualifications:
• MS in Materials Science or Engineering with a minimum of 3 years of directly related experience
• Experience with the tools and equipment used in a materials testing facility
• Experience with optical and electron microscopes
• Experience with analytical tools, such as electron dispersive spectroscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) microscopy
• Experience with the use of image analysis ideas and applications
• Basic understanding of non-destructive evaluation techniques
• Experience presenting technical information
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally
• Applicants must be a Citizen of the U.S.A. and be able to pass a National Agency Check for continued employment

R3 Minimum Qualifications:
• MS in Materials Science or Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of directly related experience
• Proficient with optical and electron microscopes
• Proficient with analytical tools, such as electron dispersive spectroscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) microscopy
• Proficient with the use of image analysis ideas and applications
• Proficient at presenting technical information
• Detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks; ability to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision
• Applicants must be a Citizen of the U.S.A. and be able to pass a National Agency Check for continued employment

Preferred Qualifications
• PhD in Materials Science or Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of directly related experience
• Demonstrated successful experience with the tools and equipment used in a materials testing facility
• Demonstrated successful experience with optical and electron microscopes

• Demonstrated supervisory experience with engineers, technicians, and students

A federal court on December 7, 2021, issued a ruling that suspends the COVID-19 vaccine requirement that applies to federal contractors nationwide.
