The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible to plan, organize, direct and supervise professional engineering work related to the investigation, planning, design, construction and maintenance and operations of a variety of public works facilities, systems and projects as well as residential, commercial, industrial and multi-family building and development projects; to manage and perform the most complex and difficult engineering tasks related to assigned area of responsibility.
Senior Civil Engineers are allocated to multiple departments within the organization. The list established with this recruitment will be utilized to fill the existing vacancy in the Land Development Engineering Division of the Community & Economic Development Department, and any additional Senior Civil Engineer vacancies that may occur in the Water Engineering Design, Wastewater Engineering Design, Construction Administration and Water Resources Engineering Divisions of the Utilities Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced journey level in the Civil Engineer series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, and the nature of the public contact made. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series, including providing direct supervision over assigned personnel including Registered Engineers. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSExperience: Four years of increasingly responsible professional civil engineering experience, including one year of supervisory responsibility.
Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate: Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of California.
