The Opportunity
WSDOT has exciting opportunities for three motivated individuals who have strong leadership skills and exceptional aptitude for managing projects. The Project Engineering Offices in Chehalis and Vancouver are looking for Transportation Engineer 3s to serve as Design Team Leads for the Area Engineer on one or more projects. These positions will manage and mentor team members and provide guidance regarding design and construction functions to ensure that WSDOT projects meet established standards, policies, and procedures. What to Expect
Occasional field work performed with the purpose of observation and information gathering. Exposure to hazards include traffic, noise, construction, weather, and uneven terrain.
 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Design Team Leads will:

  • Serve as Construction and Design Team Lead for the Area Engineer on one or more projects.
  • Lead a team or teams of designers and provide guidance, as necessary, in delivery of assigned projects. 
  • Participate in the implementation and development of pre-activity safety plans.
  • Ensure design of highway projects are developed according to the current and appropriate Federal, WSDOT, and local guidelines and procedures.
  • Lead project scoping and project definition development. 
  • Evaluate alternate designs requiring detailed analysis of accident data, capacity studies, hydraulics, etc. 
  • Lead a team that prepares and/or reviews design documentation, reports, calculations, estimates, etc., following design manual guidance for design documentation package and project file. 
  • Prepare plans, estimates, special provisions, specifications, and other information needed for project completion applying agency policies, standards, and procedures as well as transportation engineering principles. 
  • Perform field site assessments and gather field data. 
  • Research highway vicinity as-built information and traffic data.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for these opportunities, the following are required:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2, or equivalent.
  • Experience implementing WSDOT design, construction practices and procedures. 
  • Experience in communicating to multiple audiences, both orally and in writing. 
  • Proven skills in research and interpretation of contract provisions, plans, drawings, and details. 
  • A valid unrestricted Driver’s License.
 
It is preferredthat qualified candidates also have:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or closely related field. 
  • Engineer-In-Training Certification (EIT).
  • Four (4) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 2 or equivalent engineering experience.
  • Experience with coordinating multiple projects with design and construction team leaders and prioritizing assignments. 
  • Experience assigning tasks and responsibilities to staff for both design and construction projects. 
  • The ability to supervise staff (assign, train, and evaluate performance). 
  • Knowledge of each position under direct supervision. 
  • Demonstrated competency in all aspects of project delivery: scoping, design, construction inspection, and construction administration.
