Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Process Engineer will maintain and improve upon the product-processing foundation. The Process Engineer will also troubleshoot issues with equipment and materials, research and implement new tools and techniques to increase production efficiency, and establish a protocol for obtaining acceptable product quality in a safe and timely manner.

Essential Functions:

  • Troubleshoot issues with equipment and materials when they arise. (daily)
  • Supervise, optimize, and document production runs assigned as part of the PPR process. (daily)
  • Supervise and improve upon all extrusion processes involving high-difficulty/high-cost materials, equipment, etc. (e.g., fluoropolymers, foamed product, cross-link, etc.) (daily)
  • Drive minimization of scrap, low-speeds, and downtime both strategically and in-situ. (daily)
  • Coordinate with data analysts/engineers to hone focus on specific lines, products, etc., based on monitored KPI’s. (weekly/monthly)
  • Coordinate documentation of processing parameters for currently-running work orders. (daily)
  • Review and/or update product router notes with correct tooling, heat profiles, and other relevant technical parameters to be used. (daily/weekly)
  • Maintain a processing database describing generic/starting parameters utilized for all compounds supported by an organized directory of process notes. (monthly)
  • Handle purchasing of equipment for production lines involving engineering projects (weekly/monthly)
  • Direct the maintenance and organization of tooling resources (tips/dies, screws, screens, etc.) (weekly/monthly)
  • Work with fellow engineers on various R&D projects by discussing ideas, producing experiment formats and test reports, and conducting said tests in person and/or through direct supervision of multiple stages of operation. (daily/weekly)
  • Remain up-to-date with processing techniques by reading relevant literature and attending various extrusion seminars and plant visits. (quarterly/annually)

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of applying mass and energy transfer equations to determine various outputs and engineering requirements
  • Knowledge of polymer melt rheology and the parameters that influence it, such as temperature and mechanical shear
  • Knowledge of process control principles and ability to assist operators in applying them
  • Good understanding of drawdown ratios and other similar tooling techniques used to maximize product quality and throughput
  • Background in chemical, mechanical, and electrical sciences and ability to apply and refine it to extrusion and cable construction principles

  • Ability to read and understand electrical/mechanical drawings and device manuals

  • Ability to utilize Calculus and other advanced mathematical calculations and to quickly perform basic arithmetic and estimations in one’s head
  • Ability to efficiently respond to process malfunctions and to mitigate their occurrence proactively
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership and accountability during difficult/uncertain circumstances through composed, prompt, prudent, and decisive action
  • Proficient with data-processing software and engineering packages, specifically: Microsoft Excel, CAD software, Sikora Equipment, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of progressive work experience in a manufacturing environment
  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical, chemical, electrical, or other relevant types of engineering degree.
