Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (https://www.lbl.gov/) seeks Accelerator System Safety Engineers (Multiple Openings) in the Engineering Division (https://engineering.lbl.gov/)  to be matrixed to the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U, https://als.lbl.gov/als-u/overview/) Project.

The Safety Systems at the ALS are responsible for protection of personnel from prompt radiation, in the framework of accelerator safety systems (Personnel Protection Systems and Beam Containment Systems) and associated support equipment.  You are responsible for overseeing the full system lifecycle and for analyzing and designing safety systems. You will direct the efforts of Engineers, Associate Engineers and Technicians in addition to collaborating with Engineers and Scientists within the ALS, other divisions, DOE labs, and the international accelerator community.

What You Will Do:

• Contribute to the development of safety systems for the ALS-U project, including the study of codes of federal, state, and local regulations, DOE orders, LBNL policies, and procedures.

• Generate system requirements and specifications following the safety lifecycle process, collaborating with the Radiation Protection Group.

• Contribute to the development of innovative solutions in the safety systems for existing and future particle accelerators.

• Provide engineering effort for the fail-safe design of beam loss or radiation sensing electronics.

• Contribute to the design of formal electrical and electronic schematics and wiring diagrams of new systems as well as upgrading existing relay-based systems.

• Contribute to the design and programming of SIL rated PLC-based controllers.

• Define, implement, and execute reliability and qualification tests. Design electronic test benches; perform safety and reliability analysis and tests, and develop documentation.

• Develop engineering requirements and specifications, create and review procedures and user manuals.

• Integrate systems, perform reliability and failure data analysis and oversee installations.

• Generate test procedures and work with a team to field-certify installed systems.

• Assist quality assurance with qualification and corrective action activities.

• Interface with field support and other technical entities to resolve quality and reliability issues.

• Interface with vendors/subcontractors, including oversight of outsourced project scope, schedule, risks, resources, and quality of work.

• Collaborate with engineers and scientists. Direct the work of other coordinators, designers, technicians, and maintenance personnel.

• Support projects with cost estimates, budgets, schedules, and procurement of key components.

• Maintain compliance with applicable LBNL policies and standards (Engineering Process, Electrical Equipment Inspection Program, Safety Software Quality Assurance, safety protocols, a respectful workplace, etc.).

• Contribute to the development of the department’s mission and committed to achieving it in a safe and respectful manner, in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

What is Required:

• Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience.

• 5 years experience in the following:

   - Electronic circuits with experience in design, development, or manufacturing of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) or Distributed Control Systems (DCS). Proficiency in common software CAD tools for schematic entry.

   - Programming SIL rated PLC-based systems in ladder logic or other languages.

   - Technical writing and preparation of formal reports and user manuals.

   - Reliability/safety analysis techniques (HAZOP, LOPA); Safety Life Cycle; Systems Engineering.

• Ability to work efficiently as part of a collaborative team, lead, plan and organize projects, meet scheduled commitments on time.

• Ability to lead the technical efforts of subordinates and peers (technicians, engineering associates, and engineers).

• Demonstrated ability to pro-actively develop and implement solutions to a variety of technical problems.

• Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions, solve unique problems, and interact effectively within a diverse team.

• Effective oral and written communications skills sufficient to document, present, and summarize results of research and development activities.

• Highly organized, good interpersonal skills, and strong communication skills, both oral and written.

• Familiarity with international safety standards (e.g., IEC 61508 - ISA/ANSI 84.01).

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in project management including the use of software tools such as Microsoft Project (or equivalent) and the ability to develop and manage time-phased budgets.

• Experience with contract management, from the development of statements of work, to the support of the contracting phase through procurement, as well as the monitoring and tracking of the technical work execution of the resulting contracts.

• Demonstrated ability to contribute to the initiation of projects, using analytical skills, and working with minimal supervision; extreme attention to details.

• Demonstrated ability to enhance capabilities to a complex user facility, while minimizing operational impact.

Notes:

• This is a full time, 2 years, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
