Examples of Work

A Pavement Designer is an essential part of the NDOT team. They play a key role in developing State Roadway Projects, responsible for developing the pavement strategies for most of our roadways. Duties include using "As-Built" plans to develop a roadway history for sections of highway, develop a planning pavement strategy through that section, write up a pavement determination for the project, and continue to review and update the pavement strategy as the project moves through the design process. Field visits could be needed to get a better understanding of existing road condition. The Pavement Designer will need to have a good working relationship with the District Engineers. Throughout the project communication with key stakeholders is required. Keeping organized project documents, correspondences, and updates on OnBase is essential. Managing tasks as determined by our Program Management system to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner. This position will need to utilize computer software in the performance of job duties. Some of the software includes: Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat DC, Pathweb, Microstation, Mainframe application, Clarity, Pavement Management System, OnBase, ProjectWise, and ME Design. 

Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:  Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.

NOTE: If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, will consider applicants at the Engineer level. Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment. 

PREFERRED: Experience in pavement design, construction and/or roadway design experience. Experience in interpreting highway construction plans. 

OTHER: Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent). Drivers license is required. Typically less than 5 nights/ year overnight travel is required. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have the ability to communicate effectively with people of different disciplines and backgrounds. Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. Demonstrates a positive attitude. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Adobe products. Basic knowledge of Microstation and OnBase. NDOT encourages applicants of all ages and experience.
