Job Description:

The Advanced Composites Group that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly talented engineer to perform research in the area of composites testing and analysis. The successful candidate will have experience in polymer matrix composites manufacturing, testing, and work in a laboratory environment. Major duties include supporting projects on determining mechanical behavior of composite materials and working with test engineers and other senior technical staff to meet sponsor project deliverables and goals as well as support general lab operations. Additionally, the candidate will help build the composites business through proposal writing and marketing the capabilities of UDRI to prospective customers.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree by 31 December 2021 in Mechanical, Materials, or related Engineering discipline from an accredited University.
• Ability to design test fixtures and test specimens to meet customer requirements using Solidworks.
• Experience in the setup and execution of standard and non-standard mechanical test procedures to measure mechanical behavior and material properties.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally on technical subject areas.
• Ability to train other professionals and technicians.
• Experience using tools and equipment used in a materials testing facility.
• Experience using MSOffice suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Due to security clearance requirements of this position, the applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience documenting research findings in technical reports.
• Demonstrated successful experience using tools and equipment used in a materials testing facility.
• Has a working understanding of the ISO-9001:2015 quality system, and contributes to the advancement of quality initiatives.
• Uses Matlab, Labview, Python, or other programming languages to efficiently reduce and analyze test data.
• Ability to apply bonded resistance strain gages to coupons and test articles.
• Experience using Instron Bluehill, MTS Testworks, or other mechanical testing equipment.
• Demonstrated ability to perform math calculations for the verification of machinery assemblies, stress & strain calculations, and validation of test data.
• Ability to interface and build relationships with suppliers to acquire project materials.
• Ability to contribute to proposal and other marketing efforts to prospective customers.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to successfully supervise others.
