Job Description:

The Senior Java Developer is responsible for the planning, development, deployment, integration points, and maintenance of innovative applications that serve the University’s business and educational objectives. Specifically, this position is responsible for all activities related to the development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of the campus Learning Management System (LMS) and associated online learning technologies. It is the job of this position not only to successfully maintain and grow existing technologies but also to research new areas for growth and innovation related to the entire technology stack. Technologies include Oracle databases, Java, Hibernate/JPA, Spring MVC, various web frameworks (Velocity, JSF, JSP, Thymeleaf, Handlebars, Wicket), web components, and general HTML, Javascript, and CSS/SASS.

The position works collaboratively with members of the systems and support team in the Center for Online Learning, central IT, and associated project partners and customers. Additionally, this position acts as a mentor for more junior developers and a resource for testing and support personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Three years of web application development experience in a professional work environment.
2. Demonstrated experience with SCRUM or another Agile methodology
3. Expertise in the following languages/tools: Java, Javascript, HTML, CSS, SQL (MySQL/Oracle), Apache Tomcat, Git
4. Ability to multitask and work well under pressure in rare mission critical situations
5. Effective verbal and written communication skills
6. Ability to collaborate professionally with a diverse group of users and support staff

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
2. One or more years experience in java web application development
3. Experience developing robust, standards-based APIs as well as connecting applications through integrations APIs such as IMS LTI
4. Experience with PHP, Python, Elasticsearch, Apache Ignite, Docker
5. Experience leading a software development and/or QA team
6. Proven server administration experience
7. Experience with support or administration of a course management system such as Canvas, D2L, Moodle, Sakai
8. Prior professional work experience in higher education
9. Ability to conduct needs assessment for clients that results in the development of software solutions
