Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s (LBNL) ESnet (Scientific Networking Division) has an opening for a Networking Research Engineer to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will work in a collaborative, results-driven development environment to help guide ESnet’s strategic R&D direction. As a member of ESnet’s Testbed and Prototypes Group, you will consult and collaborate with ESnet users, peer ESnet organizations, and peer Research and Education (R&E) Networks, along with internal software development, network engineering and operations teams. You will lead the exploration of leading edge technologies and develop proof of concepts and prototypes that ESnet can adopt in its next generation networks to support the mission of  DOE Office of Science.

What You Will Do:
  • Lead investigations into emerging technologies and determine their viability to augment the capabilities of ESnet and its mission.
  • Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team in gathering requirements, designing, implementing, and testing new network service prototypes.
  • Take on the role of Principal Investigator (PI) for research grants, and manage teams that may consist of engineers, postdocs and students  to successfully develop and complete project scopes, on time and within project budgets.
  • Engage with researchers to investigate and publish peer-reviewed papers as well as be able to present effectively at research conferences.
  • Engage with the R&E networking community to prototype and deploy novel network services.

What is Required:
  • PhD degree and a minimum of twelve years of experience in computer network R&D, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing, and testing network services.
  • Demonstrated experience writing software code using two  or more of the following: Python, Go, Java, C/C++, or Javascript.
  • Experience with network storage and high performance data transfer.
  • Experience with wireless cellular networking.
  • Experience with quantum networking.
  • Experience with grant proposal writing and research project management.
  • Experience with advanced technical writing and scientific journal research or publications.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated understanding of network transport protocols, such as TCP, UDP, and QUIC.
  • Working knowledge of quantum networking, e.g., transduction, teleportation, control protocols.
  • Working knowledge of wireless cellular networking, e.g., 5G, 6G
  • Understanding of Software Defined Networking (SDN).
  • Demonstrated technical mentoring skills.

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
