Job Description:

Founded in 1983, EOP is an academic department in the School of Engineering offering MS and PhD degrees. It is grouped and ranked within the top 10% of ECE departments in the research category by the National Research Council.

The Electro-Optics and Photonics Department at the University of Dayton seeks a postdoctoral research scholar to join a multi-university collaborative project on the application of deep machine learning for optical turbulence characterization. This project will lead to a better understanding of optical wave propagation in deep turbulence and provide new sensing systems that utilize Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning for processing of signals measured by electro-optics sensors. The outcomes of this project will have implications for a variety of fields, including laser communications, remote sensing and imaging applications. Anticipated areas of responsibility for the postdoctoral research scholar include (1) performing state-of-the-art designs of deep neural network (DNN) models, (2) collecting and analyzing a diverse suite of observational datasets (e.g., scintillometer, MAPR, power-in-the-bucket, and power-in-the-fiber sensors), (3) developing AI/ML methodologies for the estimation of the refractive index structure parameter (Cn2) from both modeled and measured data, (4) presenting research results at various meetings, conferences, and workshops, (5) publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, and (6) mentoring graduate students working on the same project. In addition, the postdoctoral research scholar is expected to interact with professors, scientists, and students in the University of Dayton Electro-Optics and Photonics Department, and with peer research groups in government, industry, and academic laboratories.

Minimum Qualifications
ABD (all but dissertation) in image/signal processing, AI/ML, computer vision, optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, or a closely related field
In-depth understanding of state-of-the-art AI/ML and FPGA/GPU computational hardware
Extensive knowledge with NVIDIA GPUs & Intel FPGA design and programming
Strong communication skills
Ability to work productively in a research team
A track record of technical publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

PhD. or equivalent in image/signal processing, AI/ML, computer vision, optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging or a closely related field
Understanding of atmospheric turbulence
Familiarity with OpenCV AI
Coding experience with Keras & ThensorFlow
Working knowledge of parallel computing
