Job Description:

This position is within UDRI’s Aerostructures Team which offers significant experience working with airframe structures, landing gear, tires, transparency systems, radome structures, and engine components. The Aerostructures Team is part of the Structures Group which has solved complex engineering problems and conducted structures-related research and development for over 40 years. The Aerostructures Team and Structures Group are key contributors to the integrated and dynamic Applied Mechanics Division that provides comprehensive capabilities for systems engineering, design/redesign, analysis, prototyping/fabrication, testing, and qualification in order to transition “real-world” hardware solutions for air and ground vehicles and complex test equipment.

UDRI is seeking a mid- to senior-level engineer having expertise in the areas of modeling, simulation, and data analysis with applications to physical systems, especially aircraft dynamics and structures. Significant experience with MATLAB and Simulink software is required. The candidate will provide key contributions to high performance teams developing, redesigning, sustaining, and certifying aircraft structural components for military and commercial customers. The candidate may also support other programs, such as: component risk assessment, probabilistic age assessment, component reverse engineering, static and in-flight testing of aircraft systems, fatigue life prediction, and mechanical testing.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum requirements for mid-level Associate Research Engineer:

A Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or combined Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is required. The candidate should have a minimum of 3 years of related experience (2 years of experience with an MS degree or 1 year of experience with a PhD degree) using MATLAB for data analysis, including applications of probability and statistics, regression, and related methods, and 1 year of experience with Simulink, including modeling dynamic systems.
The candidate must be fluent in Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Ability to lead engineering projects as a Principal Investigator (PI) whether working independently or as part of a team.
Due to the security clearance requirements of this position, US citizenship is required.
The candidate must be able to pass a National Agency Check.

Minimum requirements for Senior Research Engineer are same as for Associate Research Engineer, but also must include:

8 years of relevant experience (7 years of experience with an MS degree or 6 years of experience with a PhD degree) including at least 6 years of experience using MATLAB for data analysis, including applications of probability and statistics, regression, and related methods, and at least 3 years of experience with Simulink, including modeling dynamic systems.

Preferred Qualifications

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

Experience with additional MATLAB toolboxes, including: Statistics and Machine Learning, Image Processing, and Optimization is preferred.
Experience creating and managing large data sets in various formats: binary MAT-files, Excel, CSV is a plus.
Computer programming experience in the following languages: VBA, Python, FORTRAN, Simscape, or equivalent is preferred.
