The Advanced Composites Group that is part of the Structural Materials (SM) Division at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is seeking a highly motivated and talented engineer to join a multidisciplinary research group to develop frontal polymerized composites for aerospace applications. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of chemist, material scientist, and aerospace engineers in developing new and conventional structures, materials, and manufacturing methods. The candidate would leverage recent advances in frontal polymerized materials and processes, bench mark their pertinent processing characteristics and thermomechanical performance against traditional aerospace composites, extend current capability past the current state of the art, and quantify the potential impacts to aircraft vehicle cost, weight, and design. Further, advancing technology could include extending the technology to multifunctional structures including embedded sensors, active and passive thermal devices, antennas, microvascular composites, and other concepts. This position is located at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The successful candidate is expected to provide technical expertise to the AFRL research team to define and meet project objectives, and to summarize findings in technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Additional attributes sought include strong interpersonal and communication skills, detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks, able to prioritize workloads, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced, changing environment with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications
• Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, or a relevant field, with relevant academic and/or professional experience
• Minimum 2 years of research experience
• Working knowledge of composites, thermosetting polymers, and additive manufacturing is required.
• Demonstrated successful experience with characterization techniques such as dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and rheology
• Demonstrated successful experiences in performing mechanical testing and material evaluation.
• Proficiency with LabVIEW and Solidworks
• The candidate must have a proven and relevant publication record.
• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally
• Detail oriented and capable of completing multiple time-sensitive tasks; ability to think critically and drive a project to completion with little or no supervision.
• Applicants must be a Citizen of the U.S.A. and be able to pass a National Agency Check for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with TGA, DMA, DSC, Rheometer, autoclave, hot press, mechanical testing.
