JOB SUMMARY:

Clemson University's Clemson Composites Center (CCC) is looking for a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineer to fulfill the following duties:
  • Supports the mission of the Clemson Composites Center (CCC), located at the CU-ICAR campus in Greenville, SC.
  • Works under minimal supervision to perform modeling, simulation and analysis tasks, and work with engineering team to support research and development activities at CCC.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:



50% - Essential - Modeling/Design:
Creates advanced manufacturing process and structural analysis models of polymer composites, components, structures and systems. Conducts FEA or other structural/thermal analysis, including static or dynamic stress analysis, modal analysis and fatigue analysis. Performs Design of Experiments (DOE) and analyzes the influence of design parameters in optimization studies. Develops and implement a modeling and simulation technology roadmap for CCC to close capability gaps. Creates and build 2D and 3D CAD, designs, and CAD assembly of components, structures and assemblies of vehicles, and multi-components using CAD software (e.g. NX, CATIA, or similar software)

20% - Essential - Reporting:
Creates reports for manufacturing and testing projects using the data acquired through manufacturing trials and test results. Prepare technical reports, publications and IP documents of results. Collaborates with CCC personnel and center/project leaders as required to develop these reports.

15% - Essential - Testing:
Performs data analysis and interpret complex systems through insightful FEA simulations. Identifies potential critical challenges and failure modes - including collaborating with other engineers to identify risks. Makes recommendations to improve their functional performance and reliability of designs developed. Works with test engineers to perform verification and validation of simulation results. Works with test engineers to develop/conduct FEA simulations to verify appropriateness of test methods. Identifies proper simulation methods and develop new methods if needed to analyze the product performance and evaluate the costs and risks.

10% - Essential - General Support:
Trains and mentors graduate students in latest modeling and simulation technologies and best practices. Interact with and provide analysis support to external parties. Works with necessary Clemson University departments (Research Safety, Procurement, etc) to deliver necessary information, reports and data. Assists in center tours to both internal and external stakeholders.

5% - Essential - Administrative, Lab Management, Personnel Management:
Provides oversight and managerial support to lab personnel and the delegation of responsibilities for lab personnel in coordination with Research Engineers/Research Associates/Research Technicians. Assists and provide research support to lab personnel and delegate responsibilities in coordination with Manufacturing Engineer.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management. Minimum Requirements for Engineer III: A bachelor's degree in Engineering and intermediate-level engineering work experience.

Work Experience - Intermediate-level engineering or construction management work experience.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Master's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

Work Experience - Candidates with MS degree should have 3+ years' experience. Experience with FEA and optimization software such as ANSYS, ABAQUS,Altair Hyperworks/OptiStruct/Radioss/HyperStudy, LS-Dyna, COMSOL, Moldex3D, COMPRO, Fibersim, Digimat, ModelCenter. Experience with CAD/CAE software Siemens NX, SolidWorks etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Master's Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
