JOB SUMMARY:

Clemson University's Clemson Composite Center (CCC) is looking for a Research Technician to fulfill the following duties:
  • The Research Technician will support the mission of the Clemson Composites Center (CCC), located at the CU-ICAR campus in Greenville, SC.
  • Works under minimal supervision to carry out production and testing activities and lend research and reporting support.
  • Maintains and repair center equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES:



40% - Essential - Production:
Performs tasks related to manufacturing of composites tooling, prototypes, and volume production of components and final assemblies. This includes, but is not limited to: Fabricating test samples, tooling, fixtures, molds, components, and test equipment by utilizing detailed work instructions, schematics, diagrams, and layouts. Repairs or refurbishes prototypes and components as needed, including assisting with load, burst, and cycle testing of composite structures and the preparation of test articles such as installing strain gauges. Responsible for the completion of assigned production tasks.

20% - Essential - Testing:
Participates in subsequent testing of the physical properties with a team-oriented work environment. Learn and be familiar with operating procedures for existing and new testing equipment, test parts, components, and final assemblies as per test standards (e.g. ASTM, SAE, ISO, OEM-specific) using CCC testing equipment (e.g. Instron or other universal mechanical testing machines, drop tower impact testing machine, high temperature furnaces, thermal equipment, sand blasters, EDAQ).

20% - Essential - General Administrative and Laboratory Support:
Maintains machines including repairs or replacing defective parts as needed. Mentors, assists, and supervises students on CCC equipment use, training and testing. Works with necessary Clemson University departments (Research Safety, etc) to deliver necessary information, reports and data. Confers with engineering team to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of materials or parts, and evaluate products according to specifications and quality standards. Provides support to lab personnel, assist in center tours to both internal and external stakeholders.

10% - Essential - Design:
Prepares drawings and schematics using CATIA, SolidWorks, Autodesk AutoCAD, or similar CAD design packages.

10% - Essential - Reporting:
Creates reports for manufacturing and testing projects using the data acquired through manufacturing trials and test results. Collaborates with CCC personnel and center/project leaders in experimental work, sponsored research, and development of technical reports, as needed. Develops and write process specifications and work instructions for composite fabrication operations and processes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education High School Diploma

Work Experience Work experience at an advanced skill level in precision machine shop operations.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Education Bachelor's Degree or higher in Materials, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; 1+ years of experience with composite materials and a production environment

Work Experience Experience with 3D printing and polymer composite manufacturing processes including resin transfer molding, thermoforming, injection molding, wet compression molding, additive manufacturing for metals, plastics and composites and fabrication tools.
