Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system, WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation, manages the world's longest floating bridge, and recently completed the world's widest tunneling project.
 
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking two experienced engineers for vacancies located in the Tumwater Design and Olympia Project Engineering Offices. The Assistant Project Engineers will assist in providing leadership, management, and engineering oversight to an engineering office responsible for the delivery of design projects. In these positions you will monitor and report on delivery in conformance with the department’s expectations for transparency and accountability. These positions ensure, through effective management controls and adherence to WSDOT policies, that the best technical standards and cost-effective designs are incorporated into construction contracts. Both offices deliver a diverse range of projects, from geographic location to the type of engineering challenges faced. In addition to project oversight, these positions will provide an inclusive office environment that values diversity and creates an atmosphere of respect for all employees and stakeholders.

What to Expect 
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Assistant Project Engineers will:

  • Assist the Project Engineer to provide leadership, management, and oversight to an engineering office responsible for the delivery of design projects.
  • Accurately apply policy and standards to highway design projects and complete projects safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Recommend approval of design changes, work methods, changes affecting traffic or safety, material substitutions, contract time, contract training programs, contract progress schedules and substantial/physical completion of contracts.
  • Review deliverables pertaining to design documents and environmental compliance.
  • Assist the Project Engineer with providing support services during the construction phase of each project delivered.
  • Work closely with Project Engineer and region communications office to develop and implement project communication/outreach strategies.
  • Assist the Project Engineer to initiate personnel and staffing actions necessary to carry out project delivery.
  • Assist in the development of region policy and apply department policy to manage the delivery of design and construction projects.
 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Licensed by the State of Washington as a Professional Engineer.
  • Must have design experience and supervisory experience.
  • Good knowledge of design and construction principles and practices, contracting methods and procedures, and program (budget, schedule, environmental, quality, etc.) accountability.
  • Strong skills in establishing plans and setting objectives and goals that support overall program strategy/results; monitoring, measuring performance, and making necessary course corrections to the same.
  • Effective communication with employees and the public. 
  • The ability to evaluate, coordinate, and respond to customers. 
  • The ability to make timely, effective decisions in the best interest of the department.
  • A strong working knowledge of principles of management.
  • A valid driver’s license. 
 
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • One (1) year of progressively responsible experience as licensed professional engineer in construction or design of highways, bridges, and related structures.
  • Two (2) years of demonstrated and progressively responsible managerial/supervisory experience in management a diversified workforce. 
  • Knowledge of WSDOT design and construction principles and practices. 
  • Knowledge of and experience with Practical Solutions.
 
Important Notes 
  • This position requires a Professional Engineers License issued by the State of Washington. License holders from other states will be expected to obtain a WA State PE license within six months of appointment.

  • This recruitment will be used to fill two Assist Project Engineering positions. Both positions are in the Olympic Region Headquarters building in Lacey, WA. The positions will report to one the following Project Engineers: 
    • Tumwater Design Office 
    • Olympia Project Engineering Office
  • By issuance of proclamation, the Governor of Washington State mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
