Our client, a small and growing $30M Medical Device Company in optical and hand-held technology products sold to primary care, hospitals and retail pharmacies is searching for a Senior Product Development Engineer Optics. The Senior Product Development (Optics/Photonics) Engineer role is a technical lead role focused on the design and development of ophthalmic imaging devices and systems to serve the ophthalmology and optometry fields. The Sr. PD (Optics/Photonics) Engineer is an essential component of a broader medical device development team and is responsible for providing innovative solutions to technical problems, developing technical detail to reduce solutions to practice and ultimately introduce them to market in the form of a novel medical device product. This role requires a high level of technical talent, education, intelligence, and exceptional critical thinking ability to bring novel game changing products to market.
Senior Optics Engineer - Product Development and Essential Functions/Skills:
- Add significant value in the invention and design of optics and digital imaging hardware and software for use in new products.
- Design space efficient optical and electrical systems working closely with mechanical engineering team to integrate designs in compact usable systems.
- Configuration of ground-up optical trains consisting of multiple optical elements including lenses, beam splitters, mirrors, illumination, photo sensors/detectors, using Zemax or other computational design tools.
- Lead prototyping efforts of bench test devices and prototype devices in increasing fidelity leading up to commercial readiness
- Lead the sourcing of components and sub-assemblies needed for prototype builds
- Work closely with, and provide direction to, machinists and technicians to facilitate prototype builds and execution of pilot production runs
- Support design control activities including preparation of Design Input Requirement, design-process-user FMEA, and design verification and validation documents.
- Identify and define critical attributes of optical components and electrical systems, including software.
- Prepare technical documentation including presentations, engineering analysis reports, and technical work instructions.
- Develop/write software code to be used for the control and AI of camera systems and/or manufacturing systems.
- Interface with optometrists and ophthalmologist as part of the new product and evaluation process.
- Develop algorithms and electrical systems where needed for use in new production and manufacturing processes (e.g., automated vision inspection, robotic pick and place, etc.)
- Provide overall technical leadership to product development teams, including project management and process development.
- Manage Jr. Engineers or other technical staff as required to meet project goals
Senior Optics Engineer - Product Development and Process Development Job Requirements:
- MS or PhD Degree in Optics/Photonics, BME, or ECE with strong optics emphasis
- Proficiency with Optics (Imaging and non imaging) design software (Zemax, etc)
- Understanding of ISP and advanced imaging algorithms
- Experience with free-form and diffractive optical elements
- Experience using programming languages (C++, Java, Python, Matlab, etc…)
- Demonstrated ability to prototype and test optical and electrical systems
