Job Description:

Take charge of the first concrete testing laboratory certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Building Code Commission, with a big history and a small business environment, and work on some of the most interesting buildings in New England. Lab Director has responsibility for the supervision and management of all aspects of this laboratory including staffing, quality control, safety, accreditation, certifications, standards of practice, and on-time and on-budget delivery of services.
  • Manages laboratory and field inspection staff
  • Recruits and trains laboratory staff; ensures that all staff have appropriate certifications and credentials
  • Prepares proposals and executes contracts for laboratory services
  • Coordinates overall workload for on-time and on-budget delivery of services
  • Accepts and assigns incoming work
  • Manages individual laboratory projects and tasks
  • Manages all laboratory and field equipment, including maintenance, calibrations, and service
  • Ensures laboratory performs to good standards of practice and quality
  • Prepares and distributes all laboratory reports
  • Coordinates with Finance Department for accurate billing purposes
  • Oversight of services provided include soil inspection/testing, reinforcing steel inspection, concrete/precast concrete inspections, masonry inspections/testing, fireproofing/firestopping inspections, structural steel inspections include MP and UT testing, structural wood inspections, proof load testing, asphalt testing and inspection, jack calibrations, and more
  • Reports directly to the CEO
  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Minimum BS in Engineering, Materials Science, or Construction
  • Minimum five years of experience in a managerial position in construction engineering or construction materials testing
  • Minimum of five years of soil/concrete and asphalt field and laboratory testing experience.
  • Familiarity with Mass State Building Codes
  • Must be able to interpret the results of tests on concrete and concrete aggregates as stated in ASTM E 329-07, or have a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution and an additional total of three years’ experience performing tests on concrete and concrete materials (including two years as a laboratory technician or supervisor) or must have at least eight years’ experience including five years of experience as a lab technician or supervisor.
  • Eight or more years of experience managing multiple staff working on diverse tasks in a small-team project environment in construction, laboratory, or multi-faceted materials testing laboratory preferred.
  • Desirable certifications: ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1; Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician Level 1; and any additional ACI, NETTCP, NICET certifications.
  • Strong management, leadership and communication skills; flexibility and cooperation important.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a clean record and reliable vehicle.
  • Must be proficient in MS-Office products and document transfer software programs including Google docs, Procore, BlueBeam, Viewpoint and iCloud.
  • Must be able to pass a CORI background test.
