Purpose of Job

The Hardware Engineering Manager will be responsible for building and leading highly talented hardware engineers who are designing next generation network and security products. This will involve working closely with project team members to ensure the design strategy and plans are successfully executed within schedule and budget.


  • Takes ownership of next generation and existing hardware system designs
  • Partners with Management to define and manage APCON’s state-of-the-art technologies
  • Leads the Hardware Team to scope deliverables and manage resources
  • Creates, maintains, and promotes documentation of processes
  • Ensures product release schedules are on-time by actively managing and driving project teams to hit milestones
  • Collaborates with key partners (software, manufacturing, marketing, sales, etc.) to support project development and completion
  • Ensures teams are considering the use of leading-edge technology and keeping pace with revolutionary and innovative trends
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with cross functional teams
  • Participates in design reviews and design decisions
  • Responsible for employee hiring, training, and career development planning
  • Provides guidance and direction to direct reports, including setting performance goals and monitoring performance

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 7+ years Hardware Design experience
  • 2+ years Management experience
  • Proven track record building and managing hardware engineering teams
  • Demonstrated ability to understand business requirements and setting design strategy  
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex product development cycles

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with communications products (Ethernet switching preferred)
  • Experience in 1G/10G/25G/100G Ethernet or other high-speed digital designs
  • Use of CAD design tools for schematic entry and library creation (Cadence OrCAD Preferred)
  • Use of PCB layout tools (Cadence OrCAD and Allegro preferred)
  • Library management systems
  • Experience with verification and validation of hardware designs
  • Understanding of software development needs and timelines
  • Understanding of manufacturing requirements and process

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BSEE, MSEE preferred)

Physical Requirements

  • Talking, hearing, standing, walking, sitting, crouching, crawling, kneeling, and/or climbing stairs. Reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, using hands to feel or handle objects, tools or controls
  • Vision abilities include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • Hand-eye coordination necessary to operate tools, vehicles and various pieces of equipment
  • Exposure to noise, dust, vibrations, fumes, and chemicals
  • May frequently lift and/or move items between 10 and 50 pounds (with assistance)
