The Location: The nationally recognized State Materials Laboratory, which includes the Chemical, Bituminous, Physical Testing and Soil Laboratories, serves as the central testing laboratory for Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The State Materials Laboratory is located in Tumwater, Washington, at the southern tip of the majestic Puget Sound and just a stone's throw away from the state capital of Olympia.
The Opportunity:  
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Bituminous Materials Section is currently seeking a Bituminous Testing Engineer to fill a Transportation Engineer 2 vacancy. This position supervises the Bituminous Mixtures Laboratory which is responsible for supporting statewide WSDOT capital construction projects and local jurisdictions with bituminous mixture design verification, conformation and forensic testing. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing testing, scheduling and training of technical staff within the laboratory. The top candidate must be able to prepare, analyze, and correct data entries performed by all laboratory technicians as well as maintain equipment calibration, maintenance and associated records.

This position will perform the following work:

  • Train, instruct and inspect the work of all permanent and temporary employees working in the Bituminous Mixtures Laboratory.
  • Prepare, analyze, verify, and report Qualified Products List (QPL) asphalt mixtures which incorporate volumetric design of asphalt mixtures as well as all other asphalt mixture design types, as required.
  • Schedule and prioritize testing activities in the laboratory.
  • Train and qualify technicians as part of an AASHTO accredited testing laboratory.
  • Record, reduce, interpret and report test data.
  • Provide recommendations for asphalt mixture designs.
  • Coordinate inter-laboratory and intra-laboratory testing and training.
  • Assist in the calibration and verification of equipment.
The requirements for this position are:
  • 2 years' experience working with bituminous materials.
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid driver's license.
In addition to the above requirements, the successful incumbent will also need one of the below requirements:
  • Certification as an Engineer-In-Training and one year of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, Bridge Engineer 1 or equivalent.
  • A Master's degree with major study in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, soil mechanics, traffic, transportation or a closely related field.
