Job Description:

As an experienced Aerodynamicist you will provide leadership to our team of analysts while having access to state of the art software and supercomputing resources. This position will support all guided munitions programs by planning and conducting analysis to determine the aerodynamic performance of a wide variety of projectiles including mortar and artillery. Uses CFD analysis and other analytical methods involving exterior ballistics, thermodynamics, and aerothermodynamics. Performs detailed studies to determine how design features affect stability, range, and flight control laws.

Responsibilities:

  • Works as part of a small dedicated engineering team to perform aerodynamic analysis and CFD simulations of gun-launched munitions.

  • Verifies conformance of simulations with functional specifications and customer requirements.

  • Works with Chief Engineer to analyze, design, and develop configurations to ensure satisfactory static and dynamic stability (and control characteristics) for guided munition prototypes.

  • Participates in wind tunnel test plans and works with the team with to validate and verify accuracy of models compared to test results (for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flows).

  • Participates in initial, preliminary, and critical design reviews on multiple programs as subject matter expert (SME).

  • Position may require extended work hours and/or travel to test sites.


Qualifications:

Major Competencies/Skills:

  • Expert user of STAR-CCM+, Fluent or other equivalent CFD tools. (STAR-CCM+ preferred.)

  • Familiar with semi-empirical database tools such as Prodas, Missile Datcom or MissileLab.

  • Experience analyzing both fin-stabilized and spin-stabilized projectiles.

  • Experience developing aerodynamic databases from both analytical and wind tunnel test results for integration with aeroballistic simulations

  • Experience creating test plans for wind tunnel tests and conducting on-site coordination of test series.

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in the English language.

  • Computer proficiency (MS Office applications - Excel, Project, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).


Education and/or Experience: 

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics; Master's Degree is preferred. Requires at least ten (10) years related experience, preferably in the Aerospace or Defense industry. Advanced degree may substitute for some experience requirements.
