Job Description:

The successful job applicant will be part of a dynamic geotechnical engineering team and will assist senior geotechnical staff with project work involving various aspects of geotechnical engineering.  Work elements may involve some or all the following: site investigation observation and in-situ testing, laboratory testing coordination, geotechnical analysis and design, report preparation, Civil3D drafting, and construction monitoring on earthwork projects in mining, water resources and renewable energy.  Typical projects will include heap leach pads, mine waste rock dumps, large water and tailings dams, open pits and other water management facilities, and heavily loaded structural foundations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in geotechnical site investigations, assignment and assessment of geotechnical laboratory tests, preparation of investigation reports and application of site data to analyses and design.
  • Interpret and analyze geotechnical data to establish type, classification and engineering characteristics of materials.  Complete or assist with geotechnical engineering analyses including, but not limited to, seepage, slope stability, earthquake-induced deformation and settlement analyses.
  • Keep management advised of work status, workload, problems and progress as related to work assignments.

As part of the engineer’s professional development, responsibilities may also include:

  • Participate in and oversee construction and maintenance of earthwork projects following standard procedures (i.e., construction quality assurance/quality control).
  • Participate in preparation of proposals, bid documents and capital cost estimates, construction drawings and design reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of civil layout using computer-based modeling software.

Education/Experience

Minimum of a Master of Science (M.S.) in geotechnical engineering or M.S in civil engineering or geological engineering with a geotechnical emphasis and 0-5 years of related work experience.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of geotechnical engineering fundamentals, drafting, geotechnical testing, and general civil/geotechnical engineering design and construction practices
  • Sound background in geotechnical engineering
  • Academic or work experience in rock mechanics and slope stability is a plus
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and check the quality of own work
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing in English.  Spanish, Portuguese and other language skills are a plus
  • Ability to use sound judgment
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively, which includes planning, organizing and prioritizing with attention to details

Computer Skills

Proficiency in MS Office, familiarity with slope stability software (GeoStudio and/or RocScience), numerical modeling software (e.g. FLAC) and other geotechnical software preferred.  Knowledge of Auto CAD Civil3D would be an asset.

Certificates and Licenses

EIT/FE certification or the ability to obtain certification within one year is required.

Work Environment

Work will be in both an office and field environment with domestic and international travel to various outdoor sites determined by project needs.  Adherence to safety standards including those of the firm, MSHA and OSHA is mandatory.
