Hays Medical Center (HaysMed) is a private, not-for-profit, 207 bed hospital formed by the 1991 merger of two religiously affiliated facilities and provides the only tertiary level services in the region.

As the premier provider in western Kansas for specialized care our mission is to help people be healthy and to be the best Tertiary Care Center in rural America.

With our history of bringing healthcare excellence close to home, HaysMed offers a wide variety of specialty programs including cardiology, orthopedics, cancer, general, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, ENT, pulmonology, critical care and women’s services.

Other services include rehabilitation, hospice, neonatal, intensive care and diagnostic imaging. HaysMed also maintains a Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center and a Sleep and Neurodiagnostic Center.

A total of 5,077 admissions and 163,487 outpatient procedures were documented in fiscal year 2021, while the medical group’s specialty and primary care clinics accounted for 144,181 office visits. The DeBakey Heart Institute served 1,919 patients while the Dreiling/Schmidt Cancer Institute provided services to 1,311 patients. In 2021 578 births were recorded at the hospital while 10,444 patients were seen in the Emergency Department.

The Center for Health Improvement, located in the Bickle/Eagle Health Complex at HaysMed, is an MFA accredited fitness center that incorporates hospital-based fitness and rehabilitation programs with occupational medicine and independent physician clinics, and has a membership in the fitness area of 1800 people.

Hays Medical Center maintains a local market share of 75%; with total primary/secondary/tertiary service are at 27%. For 2022, Hays Medical Center has been named as one of the top 20 rural and community hospitals in the country by the National Rural Health Association.

It is NIAHO accredited by DNV Healthcare and ISO Certified, a Level 3 Trauma Center, an accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI, a Primary Stroke Center and a Certified Hip and Knee Replacement Center of Excellence by DNV GL Healthcare. Approximately 1,500 associates staff the medical center and physician clinics, accredited by DNV Healthcare.
