When I think of automation in the manufacturing industry, my first thought is not of a conveyor

system.

Conveyors represent a diverse category of automation solutions and manufacturers compromise their production process by not investing the time and effort to find the right conveyor for their application.

Manufacturers need to consider a list of variables when hunting for their ideal conveyor:

  1. Environment: Conveyors cannot have too large a footprint for your facility layout. Products moving down the conveyor can influence upkeep requirements, whether it be food or metal parts.
  2. Performance requirements: Part size and weight, belt speed and product flow all influence the technical requirements a conveyor system must meet.
  3. Pre-made vs. Custom: Manufacturers may be able to save on premade conveyor systems, but not all applications are by-the-book simple. Custom-made conveyors may be the only option for more complex applications.
  4. Styles and Accessories: Belts come in various forms, whether they be flat, cleated or modular. Diverters, pushers and control stops are only some of the accessories that applications can require.

For manufacturers suffering from analysis paralysis, Dorner Conveyor Systems has come through with an infographic outlining 5 Easy Steps to Choosing a Conveyor, which you can take a look at below:
