In civil engineering, why is the elevation of the bottom of a pipe call an "invert"?
they area called inverts because they are the distance from the the the rim of the manhole down to the flowline of the pipe. taking the elevation of the manhole (known) and subtracing the “invert” measurement will yield the elevation of the flowline of the pipe. if the inverts between two ends of a pipe and the length of the pipe are known, then the slope of the pipe can be determined.
