Makino unveiled Athena, which the company claims is the world’s first talking and thinking machine tool—similar to Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri.

Athena is a voice-controlled, intelligent-learning technology that helps owners reduce training requirements by giving new operators their own voice-enabled digital assistant. This allows them to transition more effectively and safely from the classroom to the machine room.

The digital intelligence that drives this technology allows the machine to continue learning as its operator gains experience—and the more a controller interacts with it.

Makino’s New Machines Tools

Makino also showcased four new machines tools.

The a500Z is a five-axis horizontal machining center designed for the production machining marketplace. It can be automated for unattended operation using different system configurations.

The V90S is a five-axis, high-speed, semi-finishing and finishing machine for the die/mold segment of the metal-cutting market.

The BX3 EDM drill is designed exclusively for high-volume production of aerospace film hole applications.

The UP6 H.E.A.T. allows high-end stamping companies to achieve greater accuracy.

3D Systems and GF Machining Solutions’ Scalable Manufacturing System

The DMP Factory 500 is a scalable manufacturing system designed to simplify workflows to build higher-quality seamless metal parts.

The system consists of five function-specific modules: the printer module, removable print module, powder management module, transport module and parking module.

The modular design enables continuous function of all modules. This would allow a manufacturer to create a custom solution, matching the number and type of modules required for their production workflow, while the integrated automation minimizes manual processes. In addition, the DMP Factory 500 system includes seamless data connectivity with all major ERP systems to facilitate supply chain optimization.

igus’ Robolink Apiro Modular Motion System

Igus’ new system aims to make designing and using individual automation solutions easier and more cost effective. With robolink Apiro, design engineers can choose from three lubrication-free worm gears for standard, inverted and linear movement. For users, the device offers solutions ranging from the simple linear robot to complex humanoid and animatronic robots.

It was developed with a focus on decoupling the motor and gearbox while also introducing new kinds of worm gears that can be installed in up to six axes, such as an articulated robot. The gearboxes come in four sizes and can be combined, allowing for very complicated movements to be implemented.
