HP unveiled an expanded relationship with Oakley, helping to advance the brand’s sports performance design process to meet the needs of the world’s best athletes. With HP’s Jet Fusion 3D printer, during the development stage, Oakley is reinventing how the brand prototypes and creates functional parts by leveraging the technology across Oakley’s portfolio of sports accessories, equipment and lifestyle products.
Oakley is one of the leading product design and sport performance brands in the world with a culture of creators, inventors, idealists and scientists obsessed with using design and innovation to create products and experiences that inspire greatness.
Oakley has been ubiquitous in the sports industry for more than 40 years – at the forefront of how performance products and technologies are developed and produced. In 1992, as early adopters, the brand first began integrating 3D printing into their design process, which transformed Oakley’s development process and the silhouette of their sunglasses. Knowing the value of 3D printing, Oakley has been leveraging HP technology as of 2018 for rapid prototyping across multi-product lines, including sunglasses, helmets and more.
Oakley is using HP’s Jet Fusion 580 platform to take a 2D sketch off the page and make a design model a reality, including the ability to:
• Speed up the design iteration process: Oakley designers can now see parts and conduct tests in just 24 hours
• Use the power of color: Create rich detailed models by changing the color, breaking up the material in the model and then printing it in different colors to more clearly see different design iterations simultaneously
• Test functional parts: Replicate the production process exactly during the development stage, as HP 3D High Reusability (HR) CB PA 12is lightweight and durable
• Leverage build volume: Create smaller and large prototypes at once
