How to determine modulus of rigidity of a spring whose dimensions are only knowns.You dont have any other info
You do not have any other information like Manufacturing proccess used to made spring or spring constant.You only have physical model and you can measure dimensions.
Modulus of rigidity of a spring is also know as the spring constant. To determine th spring constant of an existing spring you need to do more than simply meaure distance. You need two weights and a device for measuring the height or length of a spring.
For a linear compression spring.
1. Measure the hieght with no weights on the spring. This is L0. For this example let L0=50mm.
2. Place the first weight on the spring (W =100 grams). Measure the height. The new height is 40mm This is L1
3. Place the second weight on the spring so the are now (200 grams on the spring. The new hiegh is 30mm. This is L2
K (spring constant) = (2W-1W) / (L2-L1)
K = (200-100) / (40-30)
K = 100/10
K = 10 grams / mm
