Desktop 3d printers are an excellent and affordable way to prototype parts during the initial design iteration stages. For those engineers who do use desktop 3D printers, a popular choice is to use stereolithography (SL) technology.
One of the better brands of SL 3D printers for engineers is from Formlabs, who just introduced its Form 2 desktop 3D printer.
The Form 2 has a 40% larger build volume, touch-screen controls, and Wi-Fi connectivity. In addition, the laser is 50% more powerful than the one used in the Form 1+.
SL technology is known for delivering finely detailed printed parts. The Form 2 includes an integrated resin system that automatically dispenses resin, which makes it easier to build bigger prints. With longer tank life, this resin system is also cleaner to work with. A new peel mechanism and heated resin tank create a reliable print process for large, solid parts and intricate details.
Formlabs is offering special pricing for the Form 2 until December 31, 2015. Form 1/1+ owners can obtain a Form 2 at $400 off the regular price (about $3,500). Original Kickstarter backers may receive $600 off the price of a new Form 2.
