FEA Simulates Aircraft Designs

AeroNautique provides a full range of aircraft design, analysis, and certification services for the aerospace industry. Over the last decade, the company has developed broad capabilities, including certification for structural alteration and installations with an emphasis on corporate and head of state air craft. In order for them to design facilities such as galleys, bulkheads, lavatories, and closets for these planes, they must do detailed FEA to ensure they will not compromise the aircraft’s safety and must then provide documentation to the FAA.

Here is a 3D model of an aircraft entryway closet within Space Claim.

Their biggest challenge was to shorten the time required to simplify complex CAD models for FEA. AeroNautique had been doing all of the model prep in CAD before switching to SpaceClaim. Now, using Space Claim, the company finds it much easier to explore different concepts to optimize designs against weight and cost without sacrificing performance or longevity because the software allows them to quickly test different materials. They are also able to use SpaceClaim to review designs in real-time with customers and make any requested alterations on the fly.
