EON Reality, developer of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) solutions for academic and industrial use, recently announced a new update for its EON-XR software application. EON-XR is the company’s self-service AR and VR offering that allows educators, trainers and employers to easily develop their own interactive and immersive AR and VR lessons for use in traditional training and teaching settings. These lessons can be deployed via smartphones, laptops, as well headsets. The latest 9.0 version includes a variety of new features and improvements, including enhanced digital environments plus added Unity compatibility and accessibility for various platforms.

According to EON Reality, users can now navigate around immersive digital environments and interact with 3D objects. 3D models and 360-degree environments are nothing new on the EON-XR app. However, the 9.0 update introduces new and improved interactive VR environments that can combine both 3D models and 360-degree environments, creating more interactive experiences. AR and VR lessons can now use multiple objects and models, particularly when used on the Oculus Quest 2 headset.

“Whether it’s walking through a step-by-step explanation of a medical process within a hospital room or exploring ancient ruins, having multiple points of interest in each environment provides a more robust and immersive experience than ever before,” shared the company in a press release.

Version 9.0 also includes improved Unity support for all kinds of devices. Unity is a creative platform that allows users to build 2D, 3D and VR programs. Previous versions of EON-XR only made Unity available for VR headsets. However, Unity’s photorealistic visuals and tools can now be accessed on all platforms, including smartphones, tablets and computers. According to EON Reality, this will significantly improve the look, feel and functionality of the app.

Visual improvements such as physics-based rendering, real-time shadows, HDR reflections and screen space ambient occlusion have also been introduced. In addition, iOS users can now experience markerless AR features, while Homido users can employ full stereoscopic 360-degree video. All EON-XR users can also enjoy a new user interface that includes an enhanced animation panel with better stability and speeds for rendering, as well as improved multiuser functionality and automatic calibration for VR mode.

In addition to introducing new updates, EON Reality also recently partnered with a number of universities to help them integrate the EON-XR platform into classrooms and learning environments. The company hopes this will provide students and teachers with increased access to AR and VR technologies while enabling more opportunities for innovative development in extended reality (XR) technology. EON Reality is currently developing an XR curriculum with partner universities that will eventually be available for public access and use via the EON-XR app.

The EON-XR app is currently free to download on both Google Play and the App Store and is available for all mobile devices, laptops and PCs.
