Jeff Gibboney’s design, the QuadShot remote controlled drone plane, won Proto Labs Cool Idea Award. Jeff discusses some of the things he learned from his experience using injection molding to prototype his drone.
Jeff has more research experience than manufacturing, and he found the Proto Labs website helpful in guiding him about the right techniques, wall thicknesses, and so on to use in his design for the best result. Jeff’s initial designs were functional, but such features as hole placement through the sidewall, for example, made potential execution too expensive. Proto Labs engineers were able to steer Jeff into a less costly design. Jeff covers several tips he was given by Proto Labs engineers. You may also want to check out the Quadshot story here.
