Ditch the Tolerance Spreadsheet with CETOL 6-Sigma

Sigmetrix provides 3-dimensional GD&T analysis from within your CAD model. Stop using spreadsheets for a limited view on component interaction and try CETOL 6-Sigma or GD&T Advisor from Sigmetrix.

I’ve been through my fair share of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing training (ASME Y14.5).  It’s fun, that is, if you like to make parts that fit together for the least possible cost.  (Contrary to most people’s opinions that GD&T raises the cost of a part.)  But one thing I’ve noticed about every single GD&T class, it consists of a large amount of hand calculations or filling out of values in spreadsheets.  The process is time consuming, prone to error, and only provides a limited perspective on the interaction of the mating components.

Analyze in 3D

So rather than analyzing tolerances in one dimension, or trigging out displacements in two dimensions, why not utilize the solid model and analyze the geometry in all three dimensions?  CETOL 6-Sigma, from Sigmetrix, does just that.  Check out this table to see a comparison showing the value of CETOL 6-Sigma compared to the spreadsheet method of tolerance analysis.

Easier with CAD Integration

CETOL 6-Sigma integrates with PTC Pro/E and Creo, CATIA, and SOLIDWORKS.  Alas, there is no mention of an integration with NX, SolidEdge, or Inventor.

CETOL 6-Sigma can be used on the front end of design to tolerance parts with the largest tolerance possible while still maintaining function.  CETOL 6-Sigma can also be used on the back end when a supplier requests a looser tolerance.  Analyzing the ability to make the part cheaper by loosening a tolerance while still assuring fit, and do this without physical prototypes, will save money in production.

Tolerancing for 6 Sigma

I can’t stress enough the importance of taking a class in GD&T before attempting to apply GD&T to any design.  If you plan for tolerancing for 6-Sigma, ASME has a class fit just for that purpose.   Once you understand the theory, Sigmetrix has yet another tool to aid you in your design.  The GD&T Advisor analyses your model and recommends appropriate tolerances.  One of the benefits to GD&T Advisor is the embedded knowledge base created by ETI, a GD&T trainer and member of the ASME Y14.5 standards committee.

Conclusion

No tool can replace training when it comes to proper understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.  But, for those with the background, the right tool can speed the process and improve the confidence in your designs.  Sigmetrix provides two tools that can aid in the application and analysis of GD&T.  Stop wasting time with spreadsheets and analyze your 3D components using 3D tools.
