DesignSpark Mechanical is designed to take 3D modeling software, make it easy to use, and inexpensive to acquire (free is as cheap as it gets) to get it in the hands of all engineers rather than pass off the design to the CAD department. It is also integrated with off-the-shelf components from RS Components/Allied Electronics for quick and easy ordering, pricing, and parts identification.
RS Components (UK) and Allied Electronics (US) (distributor of electronics and maintenance components) have just released DesignSpark Mechanical, 3D modeling software reported to be easy to use so that all engineers will be able to create and share models.
DesignSpark Mechanical Explanation/Demonstration
The software is a free download from the DesignSpark website. Designs can be linked directly to RS/Allied off-the-shelf components for automatic bill of materials generation, part numbers, and costs for included components.
Bill of Materials Generated by DesignSpark Mechanical
DesignSpark Mechanical can export to DXF, SketchUp, ECAD, OBJ, STEP, and STL formats. Since the software is free, designs can be shared in native electronic form for providing 3D models to your customers and sharing with other engineers and management involved with the project. Designs can be sent directly to rapid prototyping/3D printer devices for quick prototyping.
Dimensioned Models in DesignSpark Mechanical
Only released this week, DesignSpark Mechanical has received press at many sites including HispanicBusiness.com and Hackaday. Early comments cite familiarity with SketchUp software operation and a link to SpaceClaim 3D modeling software. The goal is to make a significant impact on the way 3D software is used, putting it in the hands of all types of engineers rather than having the engineer send the idea to the CAD department for implementation. Since it is free and easy to use, the two major hurdles are removed, and we just need to wait and see what is done with the software that would make it a game changer.
