Designer Edge Image of the Day – The Martin Jetpack
New Zealand was immortalized as a land of beauty in Peter Jackson’s retelling of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Well, a new company, Martin Jetpack, may once again put the other land down under on map, this time for an incredible feat of engineering.
The Martin Jetpack, which can reach an impressive height of 1,524 meters (5,000 ft) has been granted a permit to fly in uninhabited, rural areas. While New Zealand’s flight regulators has limited Martin’s scope of operation for the time being the company says that military and first-responder versions of the jetpack are in developed and a consumer version will be available by 2015.
If Martin can keep to their time table, sometime in 2015, you’ll have the opportunity to fly your own jetpack provided you can pony up $200K for the machine.
