Mouser Electronics is looking for a few good ideas; ideas or designs for an object that can be 3D printed in space and used by astronauts on the International Space Station (I.S.S.). The company has opened this worldwide contest, The I.S.S. Design Challenge, to the public.

Entries are accepted now until Oct. 7, 2016. Judges for the contest will consist of Mouser engineers Grant Imahara and former commander of the International Space Station Col. Chris Hadfield. The winner will receive a 3D printer, a consultation with Made In Space and have his or her object printed on the I.S.S., with a video made about it.

Grant Imahara is a former host of Discovery Channel’s MythBusters. He has also worked at Industrial Light & Magic, creating electronics for the R2-D2 units in Star Wars Episodes I and II. Now, he’s teamed up with Mouser to bring you a series of Empowering Innovation Together projects.

Chris Hadfield was Commander of the International Space Station in 2013, and has spent a long and distinguished career at NASA. He also recorded the first song in space and was the first Canadian to perform a spacewalk.

Part of the design criteria will evaluate whether the submission will improve the daily life of astronauts aboard the International Space Station. See the full contest rules and specs.
