The process of engineering design is undergoing a sea change unlike anything seen since the advent of widespread computer-aided design 40 years ago. CAD made rendering digital, but it didn’t fundamentally change the way in which engineers and designers dreamed, developed, and drew parts and assemblies.
Today, that’s changing. Cloud-based systems allow design software to operate with distributed, fast and sophisticated hardware beyond anything found on a designer’s desk or server room. And that same connectivity allows those designers to collaborate in ways that would be impossible with a conventional design review or engineering meeting. And now, the software itself is taking on some of the design tasks.
