Can Moving Coil Actuators Replace Your Pneumatic Cylinders?

SMAC actuators use voice coils, a similar technology to that of an electric speaker.

We spoke to SMAC about the advantages of electric actuators over pneumatics. According to SMAC branch manager Thomas Stabosz, moving coil electric actuators are quieter than pneumatics, and offer more controllability through position programmability. SMAC actuators have speeds up to 100 g, force up to 100 lbs. and stroke up to 10 inches.
