When you need to show detail, it can be a drawback to use a 3D printer with the average 12 by 12 by 12 in. build area. Larger build areas, such as those available with 3D Platform’s WorkSeries can make it easier to inspect details. This opportunity is especially true with architectural models and prototypes.
With the 3D Platform series of printers, you have a large print area of 1 m X 1 m X 1 m (39 in. X 39 in. X 29.5 in.) print volume. This build area allows large, detailed models.
Compare a model built on a desktop 3D printer, such as the Ultimaker 3. The model shows excellent detail and took about 12 hours to print. The model is 83.5 mm X 55.5 mm X 34.4 mm (3.29 in. X 2.2 in. X 1.35 in.).
On a large format 3D printer, such as the WorkSeries 200, the same design was printed to a size 300X larger, with the print time of 21 hours. An advantage of printing projects in a larger scale is the ease of painting the final model.
A few other parameters to note, the layer height of the part made on the Ultimaker 3 was 0.15 mm and on the WorkSeries 200 is 0.20 mm. The weight of the Ultimaker part was 26 g, and the weight of the WorkSeries 200 part is 400 g. Both parts were made in PLA.
