3D printing is a needed tool for movie and TV special effects creators. These creators usually face very tight deadlines to design and then build special effects costumes, equipment, and so on for the entertainment industry. Engineers can learn a lot from these fellow developers who face similar design constraints and challenges. Jason Lopes of Legacy Effects has been a frequent speaker at the AMUG Conference, and his popular presentations show how his team makes use of all types and variety of additive manufacturing technology. He will be a speaker at this year’s AMUG conference taking place from April 3-6 in St. Louis.
In the meantime, take a look at this behind the scenes video of how the designers at Legacy Effects used 3D printing to create a tech-smart exoskeleton with an alien underneath for the TV show Colony.
Lopes and his team used a MakerBot Replicator Z18. According to Lopes, printing the exoskeleton with a Z18 saved his team tens of thousands of dollars.
