The Cupertino, CA city council has unanimously approved Foster+Partners’ $5B Apple Campus 2 project. Commissioned by Apple’s former CEO Steve Jobs the 2.8-million-square-foot building will be surrounded by parks and forest on both the exterior and interior of the mammoth hoop design.

Foster+Partners’ projects that the sprawling campus will be completed in 2016 and will be able to accommodate some 13,000 Apple employees.

“Steve transformed Apple into one of the most innovative companies in the world and we understand the responsibilities that come from carrying his legacy forward with this project,” Apple’s director of real estate & facilities Dan Whisenhunt said Tuesday night. “We’ve designed it with the same care and attention to detail as we do with all Apple products.”

Similar to most Apple product the Apple Campus 2 structure is immaculately designed, however that beauty has come at price. Over the past two years of development Apple has seen project budget balloon from $3B to today’s $5B. One can only imagine that engineering all of the curved glass used in the new building probably added a pretty penny to the projects costs.

Fortunately for Apple the company still has massive cash reserves estimated at around $147B.
