AMD’s New Workstation CPUs Have a *Lot* of Threads to Rip

New Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 WX series “dominates the competition” for certain engineering workloads with up to 96 cores and 192 threads.

Chipmaker AMD today announced its next generation of workstation processors, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 WX series. The lineup includes six new CPUs led by the AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX, a beastly 96-core, 192-thread chip.

The Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 WX series is built on AMD’s 5nm Zen 4 architecture, which the company claims “dominates the competition” for multitasking workloads with professional applications such as Autodesk Revit. In its announcement of the new processors, AMD also suggested their superiority for simulation, generative design and rendering (the company’s internal testing revealed “up to two times faster performance” in the Chaos V-Ray benchmark compared to certain Intel chips).

AMD says the new workstation processors will be available later this year. Dell has already announced a new desktop workstation powered by the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 WX series, the Dell Precision 7875 Tower, which will be available on December 5. HP has also announced a new AMD-powered desktop workstation, the HP Z6 G5 A, which is slated for a November launch. Lenovo revealed through AMD’s press release that it will launch a newly designed tower workstation with AMD’s 7000 WX series processors before the end of the year. Users will also be able to buy the new chips directly from retailers starting on November 21.

Alongside the new workstation processors, AMD also announced a new line of high-performance consumer chips, the Ryzen Threadripper 7000 series (note the lack of “Pro” and “WX” in the name).

“AMD has a long history of leading innovation in the workstation and high-performance computing segments, and this new lineup of Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors marks another step on that path,” said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and GM for AMD’s Computing and Graphics Business Group, in the press release.
