Today AMD announced its latest workstation processors, the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series. The new processors succeed the current Threadripper PRO 3000 Series and will feature AMD’s latest core architecture.

The AMD Threadripper PRO 5000 Series processors will include up to 64 of AMD’s new Zen 3 cores, which the company says deliver higher performance at the same frequency as Zen 2 and a higher max frequency of 4.5GHz compared to 4.3GHz. The processors include an L3 cache of 256MB, the same as in the previous generation, but with a new architecture consisting of 8-core clusters with access to 32MB each. AMD says this will deliver faster, more responsive computing. The processors include 128 PCIe Gen 4 lanes and support up to 2TB of ECC memory.

AMD revealed 5 variants of the Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series, ranging from the 12-core 5945WX to the 64-core 5995WX. The 24-core 5965WX fills a new niche that was not covered in the previous generation 3000 Series.

In a media briefing last week, AMD was not shy about comparing its new processors to the competition. The company claims that the 64-core 5995WX is up to 58 percent faster than the Intel Xeon W-3375 in SOLIDWORKS, up to 26 percent faster in PTC Creo, and up to 100 percent faster in Keyshot. The 24-core 5965WX is up to 13 percent faster than the Intel Xeon W-3345 in Revit, 7 percent faster in AutoCAD, and up to 45 percent faster in Corona Renderer.

AMD considers the new Threadripper PRO Series to be the “ultimate workstation processor[s],” and noted its increasing market share for expert workstations (which it defines as 30L workstations using either AMD Threadripper PRO or Intel Xeon or Scalable processors).

“In this class of workstation, AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO now holds 60 percent share within North America,” revealed Andy Parma, Segment Director of MNC Workstation CPU at AMD, during the media briefing. “We’re not just delivering leadership performance, we’re not just working with a huge number of customers that are seeing the advantages of Threadripper PRO in their environments, but the market share numbers speak to the strong customer demand for Threadripper PRO processors.”

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 WX-Series will make its debut in a refresh of the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 desktop workstation, available on March 21. All five variants of the 5000 WX-Series, from 12 to 64 cores, will be offered in the ThinkStation P620.

“Later this year, other partners will be introducing workstations using AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5000 Series processors. Look for availability from additional partners in the calendar third quarter of this year,” said Parma.
