All Your Electrical and Computer Engineering Professional Development in One Place

The IEEE Learning Network brings together over 1,000 continuing education and professional development courses on engineering and technology into a single platform.

IEEE has sponsored this post.

The online education landscape is a vast ocean of resources for professional development, continuing education and personal interest. This is especially true for engineers, as one of the most digital-savvy professions—and one that has embraced virtual learning and remote work.

This unprecedented access to education is an amazing thing, and most would agree that the more educational resources that are available, the better. However, the sheer volume of programs and education providers make it difficult to find courses relevant to your own career or field when you want to build skills or maintain professional licenses.

IEEE is one of the world’s largest technical professional organizations. It has always been a source of continuing education and professional development for engineers across the country and around the world. The organization’s most recent push to broaden the scope and availability of engineering education came in the form of the July 2019 launch of the IEEE Learning Network, which brings together its vast network of educational resources onto a single platform.

Your One-Stop-Shop for Engineering Education

The IEEE Learning Network (ILN) platform is an engineering and technology professionals’ one-stop-shop for continuing education and professional development. The platform offers courses on a variety of technological topics and soft skills, with a strong focus on courses in the electrical and computer engineering fields.

Where in the past many courses could be found through individual IEEE societies and groups, ILN brings over 1,000 courses together onto a searchable educational platform. Professional development training courses from over 30 IEEE societies, covering a wide range of topics across 17 categories, cater directly to the engineers, technical professionals, students and educators who seek to keep their skills up to date and work toward building a stronger career.

Course categories include Power and Energy, Emerging Technologies, Computing, Components, Circuits, Devices and Systems, Transportation, Communications, Aerospace, IEEE Standards, Bioengineering, Telecommunications, Photonics & Electro-Optics, Signal Processing & Analysis and more.

Many courses on the platform cover detailed technical content, and are eligible for earning the continuing education units (CEU) and professional development units (PDU) required for professional engineers to maintain their P.Eng licensing. The peer-reviewed courses are created by university professors from top engineering schools across the country, as well as other subject matter experts and noted authorities in various engineering fields.

All ILN courses are offered online, which gives professionals the flexibility and convenience to learn at their own pace, and around their personal and professional schedules. Your ILN profile also tracks your progress, so you can pause and pick up courses as your schedule allows.

Completed courses offer certificates of completion that recognize your accomplishments, with a select number offering digital badging. These digital certificates are awarded for the completion of individual courses. Professionals who complete the relevant series of courses will receive a digital badge that they can use on social media, LinkedIn and to highlight their skills on their resume.

ILN also offers an enhanced transcript feature to track all your course progress and completions.

Courses and Providers from Across Industries

ILN courses are provided by various IEEE societies and groups. Current partners include IEEE Educational Activities, IEEE Power and Energy Society, IEEE Consumer Technology Society, IEEE Women in Engineering, IEEE Standards Association, IEEE Aerospace & Electronics Systems Society, and many more.

Courses can be searched by provider, by keyword or by browsing one of the main categories, which makes it easy to find the courses you’re looking for.

ILN courses and programs are available to non-IEEE members at full price, with discounted pricing for IEEE members and IEEE student members. Many courses are also available for enterprise-wide purchase for the employees of corporate, university or government institutions through an IEEE Explore digital library subscription.

The courses highlighted below are just a sample of the range of content available through ILN.

Bridging the 4G/5G Gap: Telecommunications Roadmap for Implementation

This two-part course takes a detailed look at implementing 5G wireless technologies, and the challenges when dealing with the complex technology and the local governmental agencies involved in updating and installing 5G infrastructure. Part 1 provides historical overviews of 4G and 5G technology and its impact on the U.S., as well as explaining the legislative and regulatory background of what can and cannot be done by agencies, governments and the wireless industry. Part 2 delves into the details of wireless facilities and their impact on their surroundings. It also provides a roadmap for deploying wireless infrastructure.
