Aerospace Giant uses FiberSIM Software for Composite Engineering

Bombardier Aerospace uses the product in the design of its newest C Series commercial aircraft and the all-composite Lear 85 business jet. The company reported recently that it is streamlining its global supply chain and integrating distributed processes by standardizing its composites development process for both programs on FiberSIM to help meet delivery schedule and budget requirements.

Bombardier’s C Series jetliner combines advanced materials and technology to meet commercial airline needs in 2013 and beyond. The company uses FiberSIM as the standard composite engineering solution for all aircraft programs including the C Series and Learjet 85 business jet.

It selected the software to achieve its objectives for improved performance, cost effectiveness, reduced maintenance, ease of repair, extended service life, and passenger comfort. Previously, the company used the same software on the CRJ700 and CRJ1000 aircraft programs.

According to Tim Ambridge, a director of design engineering at Bombardier, “FiberSIM helps us solve complex engineering issues early in the design phase, and in some cases, we wouldn’t have been able to design certain parts without it.”

According to the company, standardizing on the software provides a framework to integrate distributed processes so changes are easily propagated throughout the development cycle that can increase the number of design iterations and improve aircraft performance. The software is integrated with FEA and manufacturing products such as automated fiber placement, automated tape laying, laser projection, nesting, and automated cutting.
