ABB to acquire BrightLoop, expanding off-highway EV business

BrightLoop’s modular power converters support compact, efficient energy systems for demanding operating conditions.

ABB has signed an agreement to acquire BrightLoop, a French company specializing in power electronics, to support its electrification strategy in industrial mobility and marine propulsion. The acquisition aims to strengthen ABB’s offerings in power conversion systems for applications such as construction and mining equipment, electric ferries, and offshore vessels. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals and standard closing conditions. Financial details were not disclosed.

As part of the agreement, ABB will acquire an initial 93% controlling interest in BrightLoop, and expects to acquire the remaining 7% minority interests in 2028. BrightLoop’s management team will remain a key part of the business and will be critical to its success under ABB’s ownership.

Founded in 2010 and based in Paris, BrightLoop has about 90 employees and recorded roughly €16 million in revenue in 2024. The company supplies high‑ and low‑voltage bidirectional DC/DC converters designed for efficient, compact operation. Originally developed for motorsports—where the converters are used across the ABB FIA Formula E grid—BrightLoop’s technology is now applied in off‑highway vehicles, marine equipment, aerospace, hydrogen mobility, and defense. ABB and BrightLoop intend to maintain support for these sectors while expanding their market presence.

BrightLoop’s converters are built to perform in harsh environments where space, weight, and reliability are critical, making them especially well-suited for electrifying industrial vehicles and marine vessels. In these applications, electrification not only improves energy efficiency but also significantly reduces fuel consumption, maintenance needs, and emissions. This results in a lower total cost of ownership over the lifecycle of the vehicle or vessel. By leveraging advanced semiconductor technologies such as silicon carbide and gallium nitride, BrightLoop remains at the forefront of high-voltage, high-efficiency power electronics.

The integration of BrightLoop’s technology and team will enable ABB to expand its serviceable installed base, enhance its digital capabilities, and accelerate innovation across its electrification portfolio. ABB plans to retain BrightLoop’s engineering and manufacturing footprint in France, and to invest in scaling its operations globally. The combined strengths of both companies will support a shared vision: to empower the energy transition through intelligent, efficient, and sustainable power conversion.
