ABB, Raumaster sign MoU to enhance winder solutions

ABB and Raumaster will explore integrated winder solutions to extend lifecycle equipment for paper mills.

ABB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Raumaster Paper to explore integrated winder solutions in the U.S. The collaboration aims to support paper mills in improving operations and maintaining existing equipment. ABB will contribute its experience in automation, drive systems, and digital tools, working alongside Raumaster Paper’s expertise in paper mill finishing equipment.

Many paper mills face pressure to improve efficiency while managing limited budgets. This partnership provides a practical approach to modernization through targeted upgrades to control and mechanical systems, avoiding the need for full replacements. By combining Raumaster Paper’s winder designs with ABB’s automation capabilities, mills can achieve shorter commissioning times, more consistent operations, and improved safety—supporting the continued use of existing equipment.

The company has delivered more than 110 high-capacity winder and rewinder machines worldwide. With more than 400 successful global installations, ABB’s drive control solutions for winders are well-established in the industry. This collaboration will enable access to an optimized winder control package that seamlessly integrates with ABB’s broader automation ecosystem, including ABB Ability System 800xA, motors and drives. This end-to-end approach ensures smoother operation, easier maintenance, and better visibility in machine performance, helping operators manage their finishing processes more efficiently.

The agreement sets a framework for aligning ABB’s automation technologies with Raumaster’s winder systems, including standardization of drive controls, machine control systems, and safety features. The companies will also explore joint opportunities for retrofits and new winder installations, aiming to provide a coordinated approach to winder integration. The collaboration supports efforts to improve operational efficiency and sustainability in the paper industry.
